Sticky Situation: Make your own washi tape from upcycled labels

How to make your own decorative tape and stickers from museum tickets and e-commerce shipping labels

Cleaning up my office/studio recently, I found the ticket stubs from my last visit to the Cooper-Hewitt design museum in New York. I remembered I had kept them to use the ticket info to access the exhibit info I saved using the museum’s fancy new multimedia magic wands.

I let that idea go in the interest of minimizing my clutter, physical or digital, but noticed that each ticket had a different decorative background and was fully adhesive…

Aha! I could cut them into strips, or other shapes, to use as decorative tape or stickers for gift wrap, or hanging reference images in my studio. Even the mundane printed ticket info becomes an interesting design element at a smaller scale.

I’m sure other museums and events are using a similar ticketing system, so keep your eye out and save your stubs for unique stationery uses. Please leave a comment and let us know where you find them.

Check your online shopping packages

P.S.: If you shop online, you may notice that the packing slip is often printed on a full sheet of mostly blank label paper, too– the address label has been placed on the box, but there’s plenty more material that can be used to make write-on labels, printed-over or drawn or painted on to make stickers, or simply cut to size for adhesive tape.

I'd love to see your projects using this idea- feel free to leave a comment, or post it on your social media and tag us.

  1. If you get prescription meds, the packaging also frequently has lots of unused adhesive space. Makes great small labels!

    1. That’s true! Thanks for adding this idea.
